Fresh Backyard Coconut Juice

I have never had a fresh coconut juice.

Ever.

I had heard that it tastes a little salty and faintly sweet.

So in restaurants, I eschewed coconuts and went for mango juice - my favorite.



But when Wayan, the man in charge of the house we are staying in offered to pick a couple of ripe coconuts from the backyard and get the juice out for us, I couldn't resist.





Buchela and Dinbit watched him in awe as he chopped off the coconuts' peel with a knife.



He brought the unbroken shells into the kitchen and whacked them until the juice poured into a bowl below.



He carved the white flesh out of the shells and spooned it into our cups.



Our little family sat back and gulped down our coconut juices.

We enjoyed the experience very much.

But I have to say - Mangoes still firmly remain my favorite.
