Metamorphosis

The other day, on one of our regular walks with the kids, we noticed a lot of caterpillars on the ground.

Buchela was beside himself with excitement.

So, we decided to adopt a few.

We made a home for them.

Buchela fussed over them.

"Mama, do they need a blanket?"

"What about bread?"

"More water?"

Grand Ma arrived the very afternoon we adopted the caterpillars.

So she was able to jump right into the action.

Dinbit wanted to pull the whole thing down to the floor. Many close calls were avoided!

At first, Buchela always kept them by his side.

The worms were pretty active and interesting.

But then they slowed way down... to the point where we thought they were dead.

We decided to keep them around anyway just in case they were building a cocoon.

And you know what?

They were!

We referred to The Very Hungry Caterpillar (for those who don't know, it is a popular children's book) to help explain this stage.

For Buchela, the worms are no longer as captivating as they once were when they were wiggling all over.

But it is kinda cool for all of us to witness an actual metamorphosis.

We check in with them through out the day to see if they look "done."

Soon enough, they will grow their wings and fly off.

Totally transformed.

Yemi's Gravatar Addis and Feven, that is great that kids do that at school. Learning is best when it is connected to real things in life!
