War Games

Location: Next door

Players: Buchela, Chen Chen, and Chen Chen's Cousin

Photographer: A very surprised Me

When my son goes next door to play he usually ends up riding one of Chen Chen's cars around. Chen Chen has a few and one of them is huge. Buchela loves them all.

This time, to my surprise, I found him deeply engaged in a game I never thought he'd ever get the chance to play.

War.

Addis's Gravatar OMG! Those toy guns look so real. Scary!
What was your reaction?

I know boys love those sorts of toys, but I have made it a rule at least in my house for kids to not play with toy guns. I dont buy toys that involve any kind of violence and ask friends and relative not to give them as gifts. It is very sad, but I believe kids are exposed to way too much violence through play and media these days.

Yemi's Gravatar Hi Addis, we also don't buy toy guns. But since this was next door and we are in China where boys have really elaborate toy guns, I was willing to let it go.

I actually find some of the pictures really disturbing. The guns look too real!

In an era of child soldiers, it is strange to see my little one outfitted with an M-16!

Julie's Gravatar My close friend had a "no toy gun" rule at her house but then her son started making pretend guns out of legos, his hand, etc. for play. She eventually gave up the rule and allowed toy guns because her son was making them anyway.

I personally try not to make a big deal of it in our house. We have toy guns, pirate swords, etc. The kids love playing with them and I don't worry about it making them violent as adults. I grew up playing with toy guns but don't play with real guns now. :) They were just toys to me.

shaz's Gravatar dude... i am SOOO anti-gun, we never told them about guns and i was even sort of against water guns! then they went to school! and now even my 2 year old holds stuff that may look like a gun and goes "petew, petew!" i mean, i do remember playing gun shooting and stuff when i was younger, but we do live in some scary times now, so i think that the paranoia is warranted, but sometimes... what can you do?! he is a cutie tho! :)

Yemi's Gravatar Julie, funny about your friend's child:) I think toy guns make us (adults/parents) uncomfortable. I understand for most kids, it is just a game and will have no lasting effects on how they turn out.

That said, however, the M-16 styled gun Buchela has got in these pictures is absolutely out of the question. That is not just a toy gun, that is a toy gun made to almost look like a gun a dislike the most. The M-16 (AK-47) has caused so much mayhem in so many countries including mine.

It is like land mines. A symbol of one of the worst kinds of violence.

Shaz, lol. We will never remain the only influence in our children's life.

Julie's Gravatar Yemi,

I get what you're saying. I remember seeing an AK-47 on the backs of all the policemen we saw in Addis. (a sight I had never seen in the U.S.) And I'm aware that that gun in particular has caused much destruction of lives in many countries. I can understand why you are so uncomfortable with that.

Samia's Gravatar Hello yemi,

Sorry, I personally find the pictures disturbing! why would you want to take a picture of your toddler with something that resembles M-16?
