My Son, My Ethiopian Music, Myself

Traditional Ethiopian music is an acquired taste.

If you didn't grow up with it, the first time you hear it, you are not going to say "wow, I gotta get me some of that!"

With that in mind, I am on a mission to ensure that Buchela acquires the taste for Ethiopian music through daily brainwashing sessions of videos via You Tube.

He loves sitting on my lap and watching the singers and dancers on my computer.

Today, I am putting up our current favorite "Alem Alemye". There are days when this song puts knots in my stomach.

WARNING: If you have never heard Ethiopian music before, I advice you to turn the volume on your computer waaaaaaay down before you press play on the video. Otherwise, your ears might bleed.

LOL! I think what helped me fall in love with Ethio music was being exposed to the contemporary before going completely old school. Now I can appreciate Mulatu Astatke just as much as I appreciate Teddy Afro.

yekolotemari's Gravatar Kirar is wonderful. Kassa Tessema, Asnaqech Worku, Mary Armeday etc.
Masinqo: you have Bahru Kegne.
You would not need to turn down the volume:)

I think I know the sort of traditional Amharic Songs you are refering too. Now a days, however,
I find such artists like Manalemosh Dibo to be brilliant. I am not too crazy about "ye Tej Bet" music either.

Yemi's Gravatar Yekolo, I love all the ones you mentioned. We listen to Manalebish all the time.

Hen, Buchela loves his video sessions. We do it about three times a day and one song each time. He always wants more:) Sometimes he dances. Other times he just sits there and watches intently.

C, that is what I love about Ethiopian music... I love that it is hard for non Ethiopians to get. I love that it is so different. I also love that if given a chance, it will rearrange a person's musical palate and open it up for all kinds of other music. I am a huge huge fan.
