For the Sake of My Teeth

I got a part time job. Yes, I know... you may ask, what does getting a part time job has to do with your teeth? Well, I will tell you.

Stay at Home Mommyhood was really bad for my teeth. Sometimes, they didn't get brushed until noon or 2 o'clock in the afternoon.

Other times, they had to wait patiently until it was time for Paul to come home and give me a kiss. Running around with Buchela, I just kind of postponed such things or plain forgot about them.

So, I got myself a two hour a day gig that starts early in the morning. I teach English to 2nd and 4th graders. I have to be at work from 8:30 - 10:30 a.m. I am happy to report that my teeth are brushed everyday around 7:30 in the morning (well, at least during week days).

Of course, getting a job, even if it is teaching English, removes the ever looming threat of the dreaded resume gap (time lapsed without paid work). I am afraid being a stay at home mother puts a serious dent in your ability to bounce back into the work world once ready to rejoin.

So, my new job is good for my teeth, for my ego, and for my future!

As you can see from the picture on the left, I got more than what I bargained for.

P.S. Sam, the one with the green and white striped sweater, is one of my favorites. He is a bit of a hell raiser and gives me hard time but still, I love his energy, strong sense of self, and his humorously passionate approach towards life. I think (hope) my Buchela is a bit like him.

Victoria's Gravatar Yemi-I am hooked to your blog help :)- I like the way you express your ideas and thoughts.
I think you made a smart decision by taking a couple of hours to teach young ones. Who baby sit Buchela for you? If I may ask- What kind of profession were you in before you became stay home mom?

Yemi's Gravatar Hey Munit and Minte, I have a great help. The beauty of living in a developing country like China is money goes a long way and labor is not expensive. So, we can afford to hire people. It is really a lot like Ethiopia in this respect although the wages are quiet a bit higher.

In our case though, my cousin lives with me. She is fantastic with the Buchela. But more importantly, she does all the house work I dont like to do such as sweeping and moping, laundry, and taking the trash out& that sort of drudge work. She also helps me with the Buchela and keeps him when I cook (I enjoy cooking, so I cook most of our meals) and when we go out in the evenings.

If it is the case that we all want to go out and we dont want to take the Buchela along, then I can get someone to cover the evening for about 1 dollar per hour. It is really quiet nice and a luxury to have help.

Otherwise, it would have been very difficult as the infrastructure for being on your own is not as developed as, for example, the US. Things still have to be made from scratch. Not much ready made stuff like microwaveable TV dinners and etc. However, it is quiet a bit more advanced than, say, Addis Ababa.

Victoria, I am glad you are enjoying the blog. Before becoming a stay at home momma I was working as a PR/Communication expert. I have a double major BA in Business Administration and Communications. I also did my MA in Communications.

C's Gravatar All boys - I don't know how you manage. I guess it's nice though because it's for a short time and then (thank God) you get to leave.

Yemi's Gravatar Hey Ron!

This age group is incredibly energetic and exhausting but it is also fun to look at the kids and speculate who might turn out to be what...

Thanks for dropping by:)
