Please Sir, Can I Have More Coffee in My Latte?

So, the other day, we were out having dinner with some friends and I heard a new term for our baby. "Halfer". First I thought they said heifer, as in cow, but then it was clear. Since then I have been wondering about the terms we use to describe children with parents of different races.

Half cast: A lot of people in Addis used this (we had our baby in Ethiopia), both among foreigners and some Ethiopians. The term seems to imply such children are half done, not fully casted... somehow not complete.

The Amharic word "Dikala": I don't like this word very much. Sure it the noun form of "madakel" which means to mix but it also means bastard. Ain't no one callin' my baby a bastard now. Watch it!

Bi-racial: Too PC. Like we are all trying to avoid the race issue. Too nice... too polite... too much of tip toeing on egg shells.

Interracial: Reminds me of Interstate, Interpol... And the Latin root for this word is... lets look into our oxford dictionary, shall we? Too stuffy...

Mixed: Mixed, as opposed to pure?

From now on, I will refer to my baby's race as a heifer... yes, as in cow!
