It is always a good idea to install a dishwasher next to your sink. Not only are all of your pipes conveniently under your sink, adding the dishwasher next to the sink makes it easy to load. A dishwasher is not that difficult to install if you have the right tools.
Always be mindful of leaks. Speaking of mold, never neglect a leak, no matter how minor it may seem. The most common issue is a leaky faucet. Even little leaks can amass pooled water and cause great damage. Dishwashers, refrigerators, and washing machines located in kitchens can all cause water damage. And water damage can incur necessary repairs that quickly morph into very large expenditures. Never ignore a leak! Call a trusted plumber immediately if you find that you are unable to stop the problem.
Make sure to get your kitchen sink scoped regularly. If you do not have a garbage disposal, you will want to make sure you are not allowing food to collect in the drain. It is always a good idea to get your drain scoped regularly to make sure you will not end up with a wet floor.
Drain cleaners are not always your friend. When a kitchen sink clogs, most people turn first to a bottle of drain cleaner. This is not always a bad reaction, but you should minimize its use. Drain cleaners are a combination of harsh chemicals that can corrode your system of pipes. Not only are they corrosive, but they can sometimes release toxic fumes within your home. Again, you can use these cleaners, if you do so carefully and sparsely. Try a few do-it-yourself remedies first, or call a trusted plumber for your kitchen plumbing.
Create A Budget - This one's a little odd. It's not so much that you're budgeting in the same way as a remodeling project, but you always want to have a budget to work with in case something comes up with your kitchen plumbing. Between a dishwasher, garbage disposal, and a water line to the fridge, there is bound to be an issue at some point.
Actions and Reactions - Newton's Third Law of Motion tells us that "for every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction". This certainly applies to your kitchen plumbing. If you jam stuff into your disposal & sink that would be better off in the garbage, you're likely to get push-back in the way of a nasty clog. If you use a plunger to help dislodge a clog, you're exerting force in a vacuum seal. Be careful not to go crazy as that pressure is felt through the plumbing system, especially at various fittings & joints.
